Support for 3-Gbps Format Added to Overture™ MD Switchers — This year Echolab’s versatile Overture™ MD switcher, available with 1 or 2 M/Es, becomes even more versatile with the addition of 3-Gbps (1080p60) format support to its existing range of SD, 720p, and 1080i formats over a single SDI or HDMI input. Many production companies and broadcasters use a mix of formats, requiring costly and cumbersome outboard equipment to translate signals for the switcher. With internal analog to digital conversion and frame sync, the Overture MD enables a compact, streamlined, and cost-effective production solution. The addition of 3-Gbps operation means the Overture now supports the highest quality broadcast format now on the market.

Existing Products on Display at IBC2009

Overture1™ and Overture2™ — Echolab’s Overture1™ (1 M/E) and Overture2™ (2 M/E) are sleek, ergonomically designed multidefinition video production systems with a comprehensive range of intuitive tools for producing high-quality programming with stunning effects. Internal conversion and synchronization combine with powerful key layering and special effects to put creative control at the user’s fingertips.

The Overture™ switchers’ internal frame synchronization helps to ensure the quality of effects and, along with internal up/cross conversion and up to 34 internal graphics/still stores, eliminates the need for external systems, further streamlining the workflow and reducing the cost of creating a sophisticated on-air look.

Four M/E keys and two downstream keyers enable title keying for graphics, logos, and bugs, and Echolab’s unique Stinger™ and SuperSource™ keys make it easy to achieve expert transitions with minimal effort. The Stinger transition is a special “Take Block” keyer with combined mix/wipe and graphic control that reduces complex animated transitions to a single button press. The SuperSource crosspoint allows the operator to build a custom layout using DVEs and graphics and then assign the composition to a crosspoint button. A DVE key in each “Take Block” enables instant transition effects. The Overture systems offer four channels of DVE with warp and lighting effects, accept up to 32 multiformat analog and digital signals, and provide as many as 16 multiformat outputs.

Echolab Unwraps Atem™, a Revelation in Video Switching

BILLERICA, Mass. April 20, 2009 — At the 2009 NAB Show today, Echolab Inc. took the wraps off Atem™, a paradigm-busting 1 M/E 3Gbps 1080p/60 production switcher that sets new standards of flexibility, functionality, and utility for government, educational, corporate, live entertainment, and house of worship customers.

“In Atem, we have called upon our 35 years of experience to build a product that combines every feature our customers have told us they want in a 1 M/E switcher, including the ability to input and output any kind of signal,” said Ankit Patel, Echolab senior product manager. “Yet we have remained mindful of cost and will be shipping Atem in Q3, nicely equipped, for under $20,000 USD list.”

One of the most powerful 1 M/E switchers available, Atem features four upstream and two downstream keyers as well as Echolab’s unique SuperSource™ crosspoint and Stinger™ transitions, making it possible to build a composition of as many as 11 layers.

Atem also offers maximum flexibility by virtue of 10 mixed-format inputs with built-in synchronization and scaling, so that every input accepts SD or HD signals, while two of the inputs accept computer signals, enabling the switcher to fit seamlessly into any production environment.

In addition to program, preview, and three auxiliary outputs in the switcher’s native format, Atem has two analog auxiliary outputs with internal down/cross conversion for SD distribution.

More Atem features include inexpensive monitoring of program, preview, and eight other sources via a built-in multiviewer; an easy-to-use internal clip player for animated lower thirds, backgrounds, or short clips; built-in 2D DVE for DVE transitions and animating objects on screen; and an FAA-certified operating system for 24/7 reliability and 10-second boot time.

“While other video switching devices claim to be 3Gbps-ready, Atem supports 3Gbps 1080p/60 right out of the box, meaning operators can produce images in the highest resolution possible today or be ready for it tomorrow,” said Nigel Spratling, CEO of Echolab.

Echolab celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2009. To share the celebration with its customers, the company is offering special upgrade pricing to owners of any Echolab switcher who purchase Atem. Owners of Nova 14xx, Opera 34xx, Opera 1 M/E, and Overture1™ systems can upgrade to Atem by upgrading their chassis. Owners of other Echolab switchers should contact the company for special loyalty pricing.

Echolab’s Spratling, Patel to Speak on Video Switching in Multiformat Environments at 2009 NAB Show

BILLERICA, Mass. March 30, 2009 — Nigel Spratling, president of Echolab Inc., and Ankit Patel, Echolab’s senior product manager, will present a paper entitled “Efficient Production Switching in Multiformat Environments” as part of the Broadcast Engineering Conference at the 2009 NAB Show in Las Vegas. The paper will be part of a session focused on television infrastructure and is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on April 23, in Room S228 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

“A production technology upgrade is a daunting prospect for a media company, particularly in this economic climate,” said Patel. “To make sure broadcasters get the most bang for their buck, they must know what their current system does and does not do, and what technology exists in the marketplace to help them achieve their goals. While our focus will be efficiently handling the complexities that arise within the inevitable multiformat environment, we also expect to present an overview of key problems encountered in an upgrade and how the best technologies can help overcome them.”

Echolab is a leading provider of video production switchers used by media companies around the world. The company’s flagship Overture™ line of video production systems, built on the company’s award-winning System on Chip (SoC) technology, includes the Overture MD, which accepts and delivers digital and analog signals in SD and HD formats without external format conversion. Because the Overture accommodates sources like DVD players, satellite feeds, remote studios, and microwave links without genlocked sources and external A-to-D converters, it is easier to install and more cost effective than other systems with comparable features.

President and CEO of Echolab since 2007, Spratling has worked in the broadcast industry for more than 30 years, directing product planning, strategic marketing, and corporate development for many manufacturers. He serves on the technical committee of SMPTE and has written two books about broadcast engineering in the digital age.

Patel, who also joined Echolab in 2007, collaborates closely with customers to ensure Echolab’s products meet their needs. Prior to Echolab, he served as product manager at Matrox Electronics Systems’ Video Products Group, where his accomplishments included building relationships with well-known manufacturers and developing successful new media marketing.

The Broadcast Engineering Conference at NAB, now in its 63rd year, addresses the most recent developments in broadcast technology and focuses on the opportunities and challenges that face broadcast engineering professionals around the world. The conference is attended by practicing broadcast engineers and technicians, engineering consultants, contract engineers, broadcast equipment manufacturers, distributors, and R&D engineers, specifically interested in the latest broadcast technologies.

New at BroadcastAsia 2009:

Celebrating its 35th year in business, Echolab will showcase a paradigm-busting production device that sets new standards for flexibility and functionality while meeting classical standards of perfection. More information on this product will be available soon.

Support for 3Gbps Format Added to Overture™ MD Switchers — This year, Echolab’s versatile Overture™ MD switcher, available with 1 or 2 M/Es, becomes even more versatile with the addition of 3Gbps (1080p60) format support to its existing range of SD, 720p, and 1080i over a single SDI or HDMI input. Many production companies and broadcasters use a mix of formats, requiring a costly and cumbersome mix of outboard equipment to translate signals for the switcher. With internal analog to digital conversion and frame sync, the Overture MD enables a compact, streamlined, and cost-effective production solution. The addition of 3Gbps operation means the Overture now supports the highest quality broadcast format now on the market.

Existing Products on Display at BroadcastAsia 2009

Echolab Overture™ MD Switchers to Support

3Gbps 1080p/60 Format

BILLERICA, Mass. March 16, 2009 — Echolab Inc., a leading provider of professional video production switchers and broadcast tools, today announced that its Overture™ MD (multiformat) line of production switchers will support the 3Gbps 1080p/60 video format.

The Overture MD switcher’s ability to accept and deliver signals in multiple formats — SD, 720p, 1080i, and 3Gbps 1080p/60 — enables it to fit seamlessly into almost any production operation. Internal analog-to-digital conversion and frame sync eliminates the need for external conversion devices, making production systems simpler, slashing investment and maintenance expenses, and reducing the risk of broadcast glitches.

The addition of 3Gbps 1080p/60 also demonstrates Echolab’s commitment to offering an easy upgrade path for Overture, rendering it an almost future-proof device. By the same token, owners of existing Overture MD switchers can easily add 3Gbps 1080p/60 support.

“It’s more common than not for a production facility to use a mix of formats,” said Ankit Patel, Echolab senior product manager. “Designing the Overture switcher to support that mix is our way of providing customers the tools they need to make their lives easier and deliver sophisticated programming to their viewers. The addition of 3Gbps 1080p/60 support aligns with these goals because it enables our customers to deliver the highest-possible image quality in the context of a streamlined, cost-effective operation.”

Echolab Opera Upgrade Offer Enables Easy, Inexpensive Shift to Powerful Overture Series Production Switchers

Until Close of the 2008 NAB Show, Existing Users of Opera Systems Can Make Cost-Effective Exchange of Opera Panel for Complete Overture Unit

BILLERICA, Mass. Feb. 26, 2008 — Echolab Corporation, a leading provider of professional video production switchers and broadcast tools, today announced its Amazing Upgrade Offer, through which current users of the Opera series production switchers can make a cost-effective upgrade to a new Overture1™ SD or Overture2™ SD high-performance video production system. The Amazing Upgrade Offer is good through the close of the 2008 NAB Show on April 17.

“We realize that the purchase of a production switcher represents a significant investment, and our Amazing Upgrade Offer is designed to allow users of our Opera systems to build on that investment and realize greater power and functionality without paying for a whole new switcher,” said Nigel Spratling, Echolab president. “While other vendors may offer upgrades to their switcher products, Echolab is the only company that provides the user with the complete functionality of a brand-new system. We invite Opera users who have not yet seen the Overture series systems to stop by our NAB booth at SU9607 to see these remarkable new switchers at work.”

The Amazing Upgrade Offer increases available switcher keyers to 10 in the Overture1 and 11 in the Overture2 system. With the upgrade to either system, users can take advantage of a new DIP transition feature, built directly into the take block of each M/E, that allows an A-to-B mix through a third source or color generator. An integrated DVE transition feature, built into the take block of each M/E, provides instant access to moving DVE transitions without occupying M/E keyers.

Echolab’s SuperSource™ layering engine delivers a precombined layer with three keys and background, serving as an ideal solution for two-box shots with a combined-graphics foreground or background. Powerful Stinger™ keys incorporated into the M/E "take blocks" combine mix/wipe transitions with animated graphics, allowing animated transitions to be executed with the touch of a single button. With access to five different transition types, Overture users gain even greater creative control in producing high-quality television programming.

The Overture1 1-M/E control panel and 2-M/E Overture2 video production system feature an industry-standard, look-ahead preview architecture, offering ease-of-use and familiar operation. Both systems offer internal frame stores and 2-D DVEs, along with tools that enable tight integration with Echolab's control and automation solutions, all of which contribute to a uniquely powerful yet simple workflow for creating stunning and sophisticated effects.

The upgrade from Opera 3408/3416 1-M/E systems to Overture1 SD costs $3,400 USD. An upgrade from Opera 3408/3416 1-M/E and 3716/3732 2-M/E systems to Overture2 SD costs $18,000 USD and includes the exchange of an existing panel for the new Overture2 panel. Users should contact an Echolab sales representative to discuss further options for upgrading to an Overture system.

More information about the Amazing Upgrade Offer and Echolab’s Overture series products is available at www.echolab.com.

Echolab Introduces Powerful Overture Series Production Switchers

Overture1™ and Overture2™ Offer Unique Combination of Power, Flexibility, and Ease of Use in Creating Visually Stunning Live Productions

BILLERICA, Mass. Feb. 25, 2008 — Echolab Corporation, a leading provider of professional video production switchers and broadcast tools, today announced the release of the high-performance 1-M/E Overture1™ and 2-M/E Overture2™ production switchers, available in standard definition (SD) and multidefinition (MD) models. Both of these innovative systems combine internal conversion and synchronization with powerful key layering and special effects to provide simple control over complex production tasks and, in turn, streamline creation of a sophisticated on-air look.

“The Overture series builds on the success of our popular Opera dual-format production switchers, supporting flexible and reliable live production while introducing additional keyers and rich new transition, layering, and keying features that enable easy application of stunning effects,” said Echolab President Nigel Spratling. “Internal conversion, synchronization, and still stores eliminate the need for external systems, further streamlining the workflow and reducing expenses associated with external equipment.”

In addition to four M/E keys and two downstream keyers, which enable title keying for graphics, logos, and bugs, the Overture family features unique SuperSource™ crosspoint keys that make it easy to achieve expert transitions with minimal effort. Rather than tie up existing switcher keyers, the SuperSource feature adds three new keyers that allow the operator to build a custom layout, which can consist of up to three sources using three keyers, available through a crosspoint button. With this keying capacity, SuperSource also makes it easy for the operator to transition in and out of a two-box shot.

A DVE key in each “take block” enables instant transition effects, and the MD Overture systems offer as many as four channels of DVE with warp and lighting effects. Robust DVE capabilities are complemented by as many as 34 internal graphics/still stores.

The Overture systems also feature the unique new Stinger™ transition, a special “take block” keyer with combined mix/wipe and graphic control that reduces complex animated transitions to a single button press. While this type of transition can be very difficult to set up, the Stinger feature keeps it simple by managing timing issues and ensuring successful execution of the transition. Like the SuperSource feature, the Stinger transition leaves existing keyers free for other uses.

Echolab designed the Overture series for ease of use, and customizable features come standard with each switcher. Overture1 and Overture2 include user-customizable RGB mnemonics, typically an expensive switcher option for other systems, and user-definable graphic macro keys. Overture2 boasts 10 macro buttons that can be programmed to execute any task.

Overture switchers accept up to 32 multiformat analog and digital signals and provide as many as 16 multiformat outputs. Internal frame synchronization helps to ensure the quality of effects, and integrated up/crossconversion within MD models streamlines switching of video in multiple formats. By eliminating the need for genlocked sources and external A-to-D converters when working with sources such as DVD players, satellite, remote studios, and microwave links, the Overture systems simplify installation and significantly reduce overall system costs.

Internal frame stores allow unused inputs to be loaded with often-used stills. This frame store option provides easy access to graphics and can even replace a dedicated clip/still store in some applications. Because frame stores can be assigned to any input, they offer tremendous flexibility within a streamlined workflow and help minimize the need to reconfigure wiring. Stills can be captured from any input or loaded via PC, CG, or other device. An FX pack adds DVEs, linear and chroma keyers, and extended clean-feed and DSK functions to the switcher’s functionality.

Built on the same award-winning System on Chip (SoC) technology, the Overture1 and Overture 2 accept and deliver both digital and analog signals without the need for external analog-to-digital converters. Users can choose between analog or digital input modules to customize the switcher for each production environment. Simultaneous dual-format output is standard on every system, allowing the switcher to be integrated into analog facilities without the need for additional gear. Both systems are available with either of Echolab’s award-winning SD or MD video production switcher platforms, giving users the flexibility needed for fluid, cost-effective growth.

Echolab Conductor™ Consolidates Controls and Automates Complex Tasks for Streamlined Live Production Environment

Control Integration System Provides Easily Configurable Touch-Screen Control Over Program Elements and Third-Party Devices

BILLERICA, Mass. March 25, 2008 — Echolab Corporation, a leading provider of professional video production switchers and broadcast tools, today announced the latest release of the Conductor™ control integration system, a touch-screen software suite that automates complex tasks and program elements to support fast, accurate, and creative production of the best programs possible. By giving users simple, centralized control over critical production systems, Conductor adds speed and power to the live production workflow.

“In today’s fast-paced production environment, it can be difficult for technical directors to express their creativity during production of a live show,” said Echolab President Nigel Spratling. “We developed Conductor to increase and consolidate control while reducing the complexity of production, thus giving the operator time to introduce more dynamic elements to the program with complete confidence.”

During preproduction, Conductor allows the operator to configure the switcher, create complex sequences, and assign functions such as M/E presets to soft buttons. While on air, the system becomes an extension of the control panel, serving as a touch-screen interface with soft buttons that can execute sequences, recall M/E presets, and control third-party devices.

Conductor’s graphics tab gives users access to a powerful two-channel still store, and all images loaded and available for use are represented by thumbnail images in a preview window. The operator can access these graphics at any time during the show, simply loading the still image into the main frame buffer or into an unused switcher input with a frame buffer enabled. An illuminated tally marker indicates if a frame buffer is on air, thus preventing accidental loading of graphics directly to air. The Conductor accepts graphics even during production. With two Ethernet ports, Conductor can be safely connected to the switcher and the company network. All standard graphics formats, such as JPEG, BMP, and GIF, can be transferred from any computer on the network to the switcher’s main frame buffer. For simple productions, the flexible graphics storage replaces the need for a dedicated clip store.

The Sequence Editor tool integrated into Conductor enables the operator to prepare a sequence that can, with a single touch, launch a series of events, from simple M/E preset recalls to elaborate effects that fire GPO triggers and control third-party devices. Sequences can be created either directly within the Sequence Editor tool or through the recording of control panel activity that can then be edited or reordered to achieve desired event timing.

While on air, Conductor’s integration interface facilitates communication with video servers, VTRs, and character generators through its intuitive touch-screen interface. As a result, a single operator can control all of these devices from one point without assistance.

Conductor provides graphical configuration tools that make it easy to name sources, assign sources to crosspoint buttons, and set up tallies and GPIO triggers. The intuitive aux tab of the Conductor enables quick routing of sources to auxiliary outputs. Descriptive labels provide immediate access to input sources, enabling users to assign sources to auxiliary outputs to suit their preferences. Any of the auxiliary outputs can be locked to prevent accidental changes and resulting playout errors.

Echolab Concludes 2007 With Double-Digit Growth Rates
in Virtually Every Area of Business

Company Achieves 48 Percent Overall Growth and 100 Percent
Growth in International Sales over Past Year

BILLERICA, Mass. Nov. 13, 2007 — Echolab Corporation, a leading provider of professional video production switchers and broadcast tools, today announced end-year results representing a dramatic growth rate over the past year. As a whole, the company expanded by 48 percent over the duration of 2007, with growth driven largely by the launch of the Echolab Opera series of dual-format production switchers, released just over a year ago. Echolab also developed its dealer network and leveraged existing dealer channels to achieve 100 percent growth in the company’s international sales.

“The rapid acceptance of the Opera production switcher in the United States and abroad has sent a strong message that the product’s feature set meets market expectations for functionality and price,” said Chris Hackett, international sales manager at Echolab. “Our release of the HD-capable OvationMD production switcher also fueled this growth, helping us to realize tremendous growth and remarkable penetration of the global broadcast market.”

During Q3 2007, Echolab announced the appointment of Harrison Chang of UBS Consulting as the company’s new master distributor and consultant based in Beijing. The company subsequently kicked off its China marketing efforts with its exhibit at BIRTV 2007. In addition to making substantial gains in overseas markets, Echolab reported a 13.5 percent increase in U.S. sales, also attributed in significant part to the launch of Opera.

The continued development of Echolab’s executive, marketing, manufacturing, sales, and engineering staff, which altogether increased by 30 percent in 2007, improved the company’s ability to create and execute creative marketing programs for its new technology platforms and products. Among the significant hires in 2007 was the appointment of industry veteran Nigel Spratling as Echolab president, and in this role Spratling has guided the company in addressing the growing demand for flexible production equipment. Echolab’s internal evolution and the expansion of the company’s manufacturing floor space by a third were fundamental to efficient operations within the manufacturing department.

“Our extraordinary growth in 2007 is due to a comprehensive program of focused sales and marketing efforts, new product developments, and sales channel reorganization,” said Spratling. “These programs are ongoing and expected to continue to provide excellent growth. In fact, the targeted growth for this financial year is expected to exceed 30 percent overall.”

Echolab Introduces the Conductor at IBC

Touch-screen Computer Automates Complex Program Elements for Delivery of High-quality On-Air Programming

BILLERICA, Mass. — September 3, 2007 —  The Echolab Conductor, a sophisticated touch-screen computer that enables delivery of high-quality and multifaceted on-air programming, will be unveiled to the European marketplace at IBC 2007. The Conductor is the latest in a line of technologically advanced video production switchers and broadcast tools provided by Echolab Corporation.

“With the Conductor on your team, you can automate difficult tasks and then perform those tasks with confidence once you’re on the air, to deliver the best-possible programs,” said Nigel Spratling, Echolab president.

The Echolab Conductor has two modes of operation. In pre-production mode, the producer can configure the switcher, build sequences, transfer graphics, or configure the on-air soft buttons. In on-air mode, the Conductor becomes an extension of the switcher control panel. The touch screen interface features soft buttons that can execute sequences, load graphics, recall ME presets and communicate with video servers, character generators, and other third-party devices.

The Conductor features an array of software tools to automate program elements and build communications links with video servers, VTRs, and character generators. With the sequence builder tool, the producer can prepare a complicated sequence of events ranging from operating the switcher to controlling third-party devices — and then, while on the air, launch the sequence with the touch of a single button. The Conductor’s integration interface enables the producer to communicate with the video server, clip store, and character generator from one unified interface, giving producers added confidence that they can immediately access third party devices while on the air.

In addition, the Conductor provides a graphics utility for easy transfer of stills to the switcher’s internal memory, enabling the producer to access the graphics at any time during the show by loading the still image into the mainframe buffer. The Conductor’s configuration utilities enable quick setup, even with multiple users.

Echolab Announces Remote AUX Panel

for Use With Opera Switcher

LAS VEGAS, NAB2007 — April 16, 2007 — Echolab Corporation, a leading provider of professional video production switchers and broadcast tools, today introduced a remote control panel designed for use with Echolab’s Opera series of broadcast-quality video production switchers. Using TCP/IP, the new Echolab Remote AUX Panel can modify the sources assigned to a particular auxiliary output on the Opera switcher, making it particularly useful for controlling supplementary displays or for signal monitoring during live video production.

“We are pleased to add even more functionality to our already powerful Opera switcher with the Remote AUX Panel,” said Chris Graham, director of product planning for Echolab. “The Opera is already known for its quality and reliability. With this additional flexibility, it is even more useful in a fast-paced environment.”

The Echolab Remote AUX Panel offers key benefits for live video production. For example, it makes it very easy for an operator at any location with an Ethernet connection to cut between sources and control in-studio screens or supplementary screens during production. The Echolab Remote AUX Panel can also function as a signal monitoring tool. In this case, a technician assigned to one or more auxiliary outputs from the switcher can use the panel to view the quality of the video source while adjustments are made to levels on a tape machine or while a camera is shaded. There is no need to involve the technical director in the monitoring process or to use expensive distribution equipment.

The Echolab Remote AUX Panel controls the routing of as many as 12 auxiliary outputs in either analog or digital format, and it can select from as many as 32 external sources and as many as 15 internal sources. It also includes a jump function for quickly toggling back and forth between sources and a function for locking down any auxiliary output. The Echolab Remote AUX Panel is compact, requiring only 2 RU of rack space, and can also be installed on a tabletop.

The Echolab Remote AUX Panel is packaged with everything necessary for smooth operation with an Echolab Opera video production switcher. Echolab Opera switchers harness a unique modular input/output system to accept and deliver both digital and analog sources. Based on Echolab’s unique system-on-chip (SoC) architecture, the Opera series offers top-quality video production switching with full-function keyers on each M/E, downstream keyers, frame synchronizers, and additional options for partner product control.

The Ovation MD multi-definition HD-ready series is powerful enough to handle fast-paced, live video production and flexible enough to adapt to customers’ growing and changing needs.

“The Ovation MD series of multi-definition video switchers is another example of Echolab matching customer responsiveness to superb technical competence,” said Nigel Spratling, who takes over as Echolab president May 1. “At Echolab, such a match continues to yield innovative product development. Indeed, we like to think of Ovation MD as a significant step forward in broadcast evolution.”

The Ovation MD 4000 series will both support standard-definition video formats and simplify the transition to HD production. Additionally, each switcher in the Ovation MD product line offers the same functionality as Echolab’s Opera series, offering full-function keyers on each M/E, downstream keyers, frame buffers, frame synchronizers, and options for partner product control.

Compact and cost-effective, Ovation MD switchers also offer sophisticated optional features like dynamic multi-definition functionality, enabling hassle-free resource sharing across broadcasts regardless of picture format — the switcher takes care of conversions on-the-fly.

As with all Echolab switchers, Ovation MD has an adaptable design built for the future. Ovation MD’s uniquely efficient architecture also means the switcher saves power and runs cooler, making for a more robust product with a longer useful life.

“Ovation MD is an outstanding choice for use in a high-end broadcast unit,” said Spratling.
